Getting on the internet, nowadays,
is part of everyday life. It has become close to impossible to complete tasks
without using a computer for one thing or another. At school it can be very
difficult to get the things that you need done when everything that can be
leading to something bad is blocked. That’s why I think that the school should
not block access to certain websites.
While some people may say that
blocking “inappropriate” things on the internet stops us from seeing things
that some people would say are too advanced for our eyes. But what has never
been clear to me is why the teachers stress the fact that we’re in High School
and need to act mature when discussing things like sex and body parts in health
class but they don’t think we’re mature enough to allow us more freedom on the
internet.
Although there are some sites that
should, by all means, be blocked, the administration should make less and less
sites to be blocked as the age of the students in that particular school gets
older. Like, for example, the kids in the elementary school should have most
things blocked, and as you get to the middle school, things can get unblocked.
In the higher levels of school, homework gets more and more difficult, causing
us to have to get information that we can get quickly and have it still be
accurate. But it’s hard to do that when you have to find a site that is not
blocked to find the right information.
Throughout school, we are supposed
to be being shaped into “responsible young adults” but how can we do that when
we’re not being trusted to make the right decisions. Part of growing up is to
make mistakes and learn from them, but instead they expect us to just cruise
through school being told specifically what we can and cannot do when they
should be giving us responsibilities that will make us better adults like
trusting us to stay away from the bad sites.
I wholeheartedly believe that the
school should not block certain web sites. It causes trouble for students
trying to get information for projects and papers and it doesn’t give us enough
freedom. Technology is too important for getting tasks done to have everything
blocked.
